Dehumidifiers: How to Stop the Sweat in Your Home

Summer is almost upon us, and along with the heat often comes humidity. Humidity is caused by an excess of moisture hanging in warm air that can leave you feeling uncomfortably sweaty and sticky. Humidity can also pose health risks—it can interfere with the regulation of your body temperature, and excess humidity can even cause allergy flare-ups and asthmatic attacks. Not only is humidity unpleasant and even harmful to you and your family, it can also lead to an increase of mold and bug infestations in your home. Luckily, dehumidifiers can keep the air in your home from becoming a muggy mess.

How Do Dehumidifiers Work?

Dehumidifiers are appliances that remove excess moisture from the air. Dehumidifiers use a fan to pull in humid air. By lowering the air’s temperature, the dehumidifier dries up all the excess moisture contained in the air. The air is then reheated back to a base temperature and redistributed into the room, this time without the high moisture content. This is how dehumidifiers are able to alleviate humidity without turning your house into arctic tundra.

What Maintenance Do Dehumidifiers Need?

Dehumidifiers require very little maintenance. Many dehumidifiers are equipped with their own air-detection device that tests the air quality of the room to ensure that it’s at the ideal humidity level, which is anywhere between 30 and 50 percent.  Most dehumidifiers come with a reservoir tank where the excess moisture is deposited. The only thing you have to do is empty the reservoir when it gets full. Besides that, most dehumidifiers are self-regulating—some can even be programmed to turn on and off on their own.

Humidity can put a damper on an otherwise beautiful summer. Not only can humidity be irritating, it can negatively impact your health and cause serious damage to your home.
